More Friend Science

Kasia Niewinski on October 12, 2022 at 8:51 pm

Just discovered this as a new second degree member and I loooove it. Love the guys over-analyzing themselves.

K Solo on August 21, 2021 at 5:46 pm

Thank you for this! During the pandemic I have lived a very isolated life style & also received the diagnoses of PTSD. It has been especially hard to feel connected to friends right now and I feel like this series is going to help me feel more confident that I am fully engaged when I do see people face to face. ๐Ÿ’œ

interpersonal communication skills are major and i pride myself in having a high level of skill in it. It makes me a much more empathic person and a person people find very easy to talk to. i'm glad this new segment exists as it should help other people to be more conscious of themselves and others which fosters inclusion and safe spaces.

Abigayle Cosenze on August 7, 2021 at 7:40 pm

love this whole thing! friendship science and the reactions. thank you for this! this is the content I became a member to see!

Rachel Howe on August 7, 2021 at 4:49 am

I wonder if your experiences in therapy have also affected the way you also actively listen, I know it has for me - it's always wonderful to see you both reacting to Mike :)

Michelle Griffin on August 6, 2021 at 10:29 pm

Great new series guys.

Spencer Higgins on August 6, 2021 at 5:43 pm

Really like this conversation and the paths it may take.

Stephanie Cagle on August 6, 2021 at 5:22 pm

When I met Rhett and Link, Rhett had the softest, most welcoming expression, and when I felt like I was freezing up, I'd look at him and I could keep talking. Link was smiling and welcoming, too, it's just that his face and expression were so intense, it wasn't as easy to look at for a long time.
I've wondered how they settled on those expressions as their Meet & Greet expressions.
They both focused entirely on the person who was speaking to them. It was like that person was the only person in the world. It was absolutely lovely to see and to experience.

Jaymie Nunnery on August 6, 2021 at 7:00 am

My shallow comment to add, is just how funny I felt realizing I was at work watching you guys change your facial expressions and I was following suit. Co worker said โ€œwhat are you watching? You keep making faces!โ€ I laughed so hard. Thanks for sharing this with us guys.

Kayse Angel on August 6, 2021 at 4:31 am

I really liked the first episode and can't wait for the rest! I too have a lifelong friend that I have been friends with since 5th grade (I'm 28 for timeframe) and I think learning more about friendship from Mike will be super handy and interesting! also, I think y'all look approachable, granted I'm biased because I already know you're nice people ๐Ÿ™‚

Audrina on August 6, 2021 at 2:07 am

This has nothing to do with the topic, but the wood pieces on glass on metal is very pleasing.

Christian White on August 5, 2021 at 9:08 pm

I was thinking the same, also thought that the large piece kinda looks like a Chipotle burrito that has been unfolded

Madison Christian on August 5, 2021 at 6:14 pm

thinking back to meet & greets, you guys both do a good job of looking kind and interested. especially rhett. link still looks approachable, but definitely intimidating and hard to make eye-contact with hahahahaha.

Stephanie Cagle on August 6, 2021 at 5:24 pm

So true! I said the same thing before I read your post.

Kim Davidson on August 5, 2021 at 1:57 pm

Three things: 1) Rhett is the king of micro expressions ๐Ÿ˜‚ all the innuendos... I think his face alone stands for like 90% of it on camera, lol. He knows how to give a look that communicates a thousand different things and it's very entertaining. 2) Link's listening face doesn't look angry or anything, he just looks like a serious man to me which I'd appreciate when talking to someone, he looks interested and respectful (imo). 3) Rhett should absolutely start smiling like that in conversations but not until he's got grandkids because it made him look like my old uncle who used to be all the kids' favorite clown at our family dinners, haha. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Julia Okoล„ska on August 5, 2021 at 1:55 pm

I absolutely love how Friend Science has two parts - Mike's analysis and R&L's processing and discussing it!! It was so fun to stop and think about something that I usually don't pay that much attention to.
Can't wait for the next episode(s)!

Daniel Boutin on August 5, 2021 at 11:55 am

I just recently joined this society, but have been watching GMM since the start of the pandemic. I loved the first episode of Friend Science, as well as all the other stuff on this site. Money well spent for sure!

Emilia Palo on August 5, 2021 at 11:08 am

Happy Rhett in Zoom looks only remotely psychotic, love it!

Elizabeth (mythicallizzy) on August 5, 2021 at 10:40 am

Rhett: "even though we're not currently on tour"

Rhett, did you just reveal that once covid calms down, you & Link will go back on tour???? Please explain! :D -LIZZY

Sneakynin on August 5, 2021 at 5:31 pm

The face conversation at the end had me giggling so hard.

Sofia Solferino on August 5, 2021 at 10:21 am

This is the kind of content that I love. The very reason why I started being a MB is because of your friendship, and I've often times found myself wishing to have something like what you guys have <3 I think sitting down and being introspective about yourselves and your friendship is a very useful and even beautiful thing (like couple's therapy, in a way). You guys have a special relationship, not only because of all the years you've been friends and all the life experiences you've had together, but also because you are co-dependent career-wise as well, so your lives are inevitably intertwined! Now, if we can get to be privy to all that introspection and dynamic, then thanks very much, 'cause it's honestly so fascinating to many of us <3

Now I can't wait for Mike's reaction to this reaction (?)

Amy Scalf on August 5, 2021 at 10:19 am

I think these are all great lessons for people of all ages to learn. And I think it's very interesting that you guys and Mike are so loving and supportive of each other. Every time you three work together, it's displaying love and friendship and support.

Elmie K-E on August 5, 2021 at 10:12 am

I'm autistic, and despite being hyper-empathetic, I struggle to read body language naturally. I realised maybe a decade ago (late teens) that I should probably figure out how to do that. Now, after primarily observing actors acting and watching their technique, getting invested in how close relationships work (particularly fictional ones, since I've been isolated and had no real people to observe), then discovering dozens more real-life examples through a new group of friends over Zoom during 2020, I'm getting pretty dang good at reading people. And now I sometimes notice things most people never think to pay attention to.

After watching so much GMM over the last few months, with so much consistent material in which to find patterns, I've found myself particularly enjoying watching Rhett and Link's body language, and learning more from it. Turns out I subconsciously understand people, and possibly always have, but GMM is definitely helping me put words to my inner understandings, and guiding me to trust my instincts more. I'm drawn to people who are honest and open, intrigued by people who'll put on a performance that challenges me to see around it, and I'm fascinated by relationships with sustained, intense understanding and trust. I found all that when I found GMM, but only consciously understood what I'd stumbled upon once I was a month into my bingeing and had mentally catalogued a whole lot of your facial expressions and movements and vocal tones.

Link in this ^ reaction video mentioned his open hands, which delighted me, because one of my favourite things is how much Link says with his unconscious hand positions, and how his movements relate to whatever's been discussed around him, or what he's saying. (The recent GMMore video with the cube/horse personality test had perfect examples of this. Particularly from the 11-minute mark onwards.) If I'm ever not sure about how Link's feeling, I'll check his hands - maybe there's a middle finger pushing his glasses up; maybe his fingers are interlocked like a protective cage. And sometimes which ring he's fiddling with speaks volumes. For Rhett, I'll look at his eyes, and watch his eye movements. It took me a while to differentiate between Rhett's false smile and real joy, but the tension is in a completely different place (soft eye-crinkles only, relaxed mouth). Of course Rhett's real smile is absolutely lovely, no matter how subtle. <3

So, no surprise: I'm already enjoying this series thoroughly.
"Friend Science"... did you mean ALL OF MY INTERESTS, ALL AT ONCE? Hello yes I am HERE FOR IT

Elmie x

P.S. I'm not intending to make anyone self-conscious, here. I just think it's REALLY COOL and I'm VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT. I've been hovering here and on the Discord for a while, wanting to talk about this specifically, and tonight at 4am I decided here was the place.

Leena Pentti on August 6, 2021 at 11:50 am

I'm also autistic, but only learned about it a year ago. After my diagnosis, I've realized my difficulties in social situations often stem from my inability to read the verbal cues, so this series is just what I need. But this also made me once again realize how much more work people on the autism spectrum need to put into social interactions to "fit in". I literally have to tell myself to look friendly (I think about my dog), or I do something weird with my face. Also, maintaining eye-contact while listening to someone talk - and trying to hear what they're saying - is an absolute nightmare. I turn my head away to stay focused.

Ashley Heidelberg on August 6, 2021 at 4:02 am

This is a very thoughtful comment and I love it ๐Ÿ’œ

PJ Dumont on August 5, 2021 at 7:25 pm

Loved this!

Allison Young on August 5, 2021 at 10:18 am

I think this is a great comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

Elmie K-E on August 5, 2021 at 10:33 am

Aahhh thank you (0u0;;)
Now I can go to sleep not worrying I said something just a little bit too weird <3

Nathan Moore on August 5, 2021 at 4:41 pm

I love how Rhett was perposefully doing the wrap it up face!๐Ÿ˜‚

Addie Iaccino on August 5, 2021 at 1:56 pm

I really enjoyed the first episode of Friend Science and I loved watching your reactions to it. I think it's fair to say that you guys are the masters of friendships and making us all jealous because we wish we had what you have lol. I wouldn't call your resting/listening faces mean but more serious and intense.

And for the record, I think if someone mentioned you guys to me, I'd start smiling like an idiot ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜‚

Can't wait for more Friend Science and your reactions!!

Erica is Lost in the Music on August 5, 2021 at 12:45 pm

You could always think about how much *I* love y'all....? That probably wouldn't be nearly as effective. ๐Ÿ˜‚

It was crazy watching the shift from your "usual" listening faces to your "intentionally kinder" listening faces. I got screen caps because the difference was so striking!

I've found that as I've gotten older I've really been working hard to hone my listening skills, especially. Anybody can be a talker but it takes practice to be a good listener, at least it does for me. You do learn a lot in marriage--or you'd BETTER, anyway. ๐Ÿ˜…

This is really fun. It's fascinating and I hope to learn ways to improve myself even more as a result of this.

God bless Science Mike, we all love him. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Morgan Willbanks on August 5, 2021 at 12:28 pm

I loved the first episode of friend science! Mike is definitely giving Mr.Roger vibes and I love it. I think I pay way more attention to body language and facial expressions than most people, I'm a very emotive person and I'm always conscious of other people's comfort and am concerned about how my body language and expressions will be received so this series is FASCINATING to me lol. Oh and when he said "I am so proud of my friends"..... I cried a little lol he is so wonderful to watch โค๏ธ

Jessica Ross on August 5, 2021 at 4:26 am

Observing the both of you interact with one another and not specifically on ear biscuits, you start off fully facing the camera and quickly turn towards one another. I find it comforting, as it feels we are part of the circle. Link, both you and Rhett have such intense listening faces, at times you look worried but we mythical beasts have come to understand that. In the meet and greets, you both looked intense as we met you, but we knew you were listening to us.
I have taken away from this first episode that I should look at the way I interact with people as I am constantly asked if I am okay because I look worried lol.
This is such a beautiful start to what is going to be a very special series. I feel it is going to really help me learn and grow with my social skills. Thank you guys!!

It was great watching this at the start of the day rather than waiting for it to be posted at a random time later! I enjoyed hearing your allโ€™s thoughts on the first episode of Friend Science. Looking for to the rest of this Society Series! Yay!
