My cats really hate this... They are one Tokyo away from putting their paws in their ears lol
I remember when it happened, I remember when it was forgotten and then turned into a little music video type thing. I also remember everyone complaining about it. I have loved it from, the very first time. It is part of the show, and just happens sometime.
I'm actually hypersensitive to sound and hate it everytime it comes around (although I do understand the comical situation there, it's just not tolerated by my ears
I love how Rhett came around to loving it!
I love how Rhett came around to loving it
I'm so glad Rhett's back on the bullet train to Tokyo. I was a little bummed when he renounced the bit in GMO: episode 1.
The last second was golden! but I already love the bit for Link-reasons. i love familiarity and feeling like I'm part of something mythical how ever small it may be. π₯°
I actually hate the Toyko bit too and skip through that part when they do it. It just annoys me.
I still can't believe we got through an entire Olympics there with nary a mention!
Life makes so much more sense now.
I have to agree with Rhett. I enjoy it, but I do skip forward a lot when it happens. Just a little tiring and boring.
i agree can get annoying i just hit mute button until rhett is done
Always been one of my favorite things when it happens. And yeah, that epic Tokyo edit was the best!
i have always hated this bit. i turn down my volume every time
When Rhett yells WHHHHAAAATTTTTTT!!!!! it pisses my cat off lmao
Who needs Facebook? Mythical needs to create the Metabit.
It's just so expected, at this point. I don't love it or hate it, but it's a sense of normalcy? WTF has this show done to my brain? lol
This episode is so meta! I love how Rhett's thoughts kept evolving as the bit evolved. It's so like him :)
I have to wonder if Rhett has ever had the thought to be triggered during regular life. I believe he wouldn't actually start the "whaaaaaaaaaaaaat" but have the split-second thought of, "Shit."
Every time Rhett does, "Whaaaat," I'm impressed by his vocal range.
I love Rhett's "I know Link is right but I don't like it and I don't want to admit it" face when Link points out he doesn't like that he doesn't have control over when the Tokyo bit happens ππ
Typical husband behavior π
watching this while keyed is such a wild ride haha
I forgot about the epic WHAT they did. it really was the best one with all the cool graphics and edits. love that bit. loved seeing Rhetts transformation of thoughts on it.
I think that Rhett may have realized that he disappointed many fans when he said he hates recurring bits and this was the fix to that.
ok but FOREEAL. where's rhett's sweater from π i need it!
I thought you were also showing, later after the first time he says it, in Good Mythical More, where we messed it upππ
hahah it's ok if you still don't like it, Rhett. I've always been on the fence about it but it does feel weird when it's not there. It's an odd and chaotic bit which is so mythical
I like the whaaaat - but I think I'd like it better at 8-10 seconds π
I have always loved the Tokyo bit & I'm so glad Rhett gained a new perspective while watching those vids. I remember my first live Rhett & Link and the chills and giggles I experienced hearing that long it's in person. π
I'm kinda glad Rhett said 'annoyingly long' coz sometimes the 'Whaaaaat' is annoyingly long lol but that's sorry I missed it remix of the Tokyo tour Whattt LOVE and we need more like that π
I always liked Rhett being the master of the rule change on this. Somehow it makes this even better when you never know how he will react π.
I LOVE Tokyo - simply for the fact that somewhere there is someone experiencing it for the first time and being completely caught off guard. Then if they go back and watch old episodes and see it happen again - with still NO EXPLANATION? It makes the rabbit hole go even deeper! It's a kind of absurdity I can really appreciate and helps GMM stand out.
Anyone else think Rhett at 5:20 looks EXACTLY like Steve from Stranger Things, even acts like him too! xP
The fact that Rhett hates doing it means I now love it :D
Tokyo is one of my absolute favourite things about gmm
I actually have always hated the Tokyo bit and always skipped past it. After this episode, I'm on Team Rhett and I may have changed my mind just a little bit. lol But I also think it'd be hilarious if one of the times when someone says Tokyo, Rhett just deadpanned into the camera and said "no."
Link saying it would be such a shock at first but also kind of amazing :)
These origins are exceptionally entertaining!
It's actually kind of nice hearing you don't like Tokyo. I admittedly usually click past that part. It's the only part my brain can't handle other than when Link is basically puking.
Oh yes please, more Tokyo WHAAAT like the #625 episode!!!
Maybe some beasties can help editing, it could be a Mythical thing!!
Anyway, love, love, LOVE Tokyo WHAAAT!!!!
the #1 rule of Tokyo are that the rules are made up on the spot
I can confirm, when I first saw the Tokyo bit, I had no idea what was going on and immediate got lost in a Google hole trying to figure out where this thing came from.
Love this series. You guys are the best!
Oh, and please can LTAT come back?
Is that fake beard Rhett at 09:15?
love the Link Tokyo Easter egg too
ok but where did Rhett get that sweater??
why does this remind me of Zoolander when Will Ferrell is trying to brainwash Ben? ha
I'll always be a fan. GMM has the most supportive, kindest, and coolest fan base and it's because of the energy and joy you guys out out everyday. thank you for all the bits and catchphrases and everything in between. it's a fun time and I'm so grateful that my daughter introduced us in 2014. I went back and now have seen every single episode, evolution, friend fight and the whole shibang. Thank you for giving us a happy place to relax and laugh.
Iβve been watching GMM for YEARS, and honestly at any point in my life when I hear someone say βToykoβ I am confused as to why Rhett isnβt saying βWhaaaaaaaaaaaβ¦aaaatβ. Itβs ingrained that it must be done.
You guys missed one of THEE BEST TOKYOS EVER in my opinion, which was when Rhett started saying Tokyo and out of nowhere Link started hitting his chin hahaha man that made me laugh. Thank you for these docuseries guys. Really enjoying them. π
Luckily, the bit has been around long enough that Rhett and family have since adopted the ACTUAL cat chasing the laser in the video for the "Tokyo" bit, and it has lived with them long enough to change the fact that Rhett ACTUALLY loves cats now. /S. #sarcasm. Fun fact, he still doesn't like community college. #FACTS
so really it all started when link said βTokyoβ and then Rhett goin βWhaaaatβ π
Love watching this!! Best idea ever!
I've only been watching for about a year now and I must admit.....I was so confused the first time I saw the Tokyo, Whaaaat bid. Glad to know the backstory
Rhett completely changing his mind half way through this is pure gold π
When I first started watching I watched an episode with my best friend where Rhett got Tokyo'd and she asked why. I had never seen him do it before that and didn't know, so for months she would randomly ask if I had figured it out yet until I finally saw the episode π
It's *champing at the bit, Link. Champing, not chomping.
It's like "home/hone in" all over again!
It's both, Chomping is a variation of it and the one I've heard most often.
I've started using "that was my nickname in high school" on an almost daily basis. It's never not hilarious... to me. I'm sure everyone around me is tired of it. But I don't care. lol
I grew up watching The Muppet Show so running gags are a part of life for our household haha.
Mah Na Mah Na
i like their more casual one-liners like "as you can see we cant", they are cute frames for a really theme heavy show, they work well on the spot even for a first time watcher without being too obnoxios/confusing, they are quick and almost easy to ignore if its not your thing. thats exacty why this tokyo bit doesnt really work for me and its actually quite a bit annoying, it feels very forced and takes too much time sometimes. probably doesnt help that -at least for me, its been obvious that rhett doesnt like doing it with the way he reacts when it happens lmao
Love watching Rhett chsnge his mind and decide he loved the bit now haha
And that super Tokyo montage was indeed 'peak' Tokyo to me, i rememver lauging so hard when i saw that because its so ridiculous and unexpected.
I love the bit and often try to have a longer what. I never win though..........
The great thing about their catchphrases they don't push them constantly, like they creep up every now and then and it's such a fun throwback. (People asking them to constantly do them during the livestreams must be kinda tiresome for them hahaha)
Absolutely love this series, thank you so much, a wonderful celebration!!
also love Rhett's 180 in this hahahaha
started watching 2 years ago and the first ever episode I saw included the Tokyo bit. Can confirm I was BEYOND confused lmaoooo
4:17 Lol! I was relieved they cut off-didn't play the bit again and in funny way. It is not that big of a deal, but I liked the Tokyo bit only the first time.
I love everything about these mini-docs! Thank you boys, and thank you Mythical Crew! β€οΈ
Finally, I get to see where it originated from! Itβs amazing to see that it all developed in one episode
I have been watching this show since the start but somehow I always missed the Tokyo episodes and I saw my first one in like 2019/2020 idek and I was so confused as to how I had never seen it before and everyone in the comments knew what was going on.
"DO WE HAVE NO STANDARDS HERE??" π€£ππ» Also...that was the very first time I've ever heard the term "umami" used in a non-foody context.
THAT EPIC TOKYO MONTAGE!! Oh my gosh, I laughed my TAIL off!! I've seen it before but it is no less impressive on repeat! π€£ Rhett has an *amazing* supernote capability, he really does. you should be mighty proud, sir. Mighty proud. ππ»
wow he sure can Wwwwhhhhaaaattttt a long time
This series is my new favorite thing π€ I haven't smiled this much in awhile! Thank you for sitting down and chatting with us! Now for episode 3! BEST DAY EVER!
Why not a digital version of "The Scroll" where the whole Scroll, to keep up with the times, has been transferred to a "Stone Tablet" (iPad) and then you could just "scroll" through the rules.
The things that made me laugh the most: The first time "Whaaat" went on a little bit too long, the thought of people seeing it for the first time and being confused and going back and watching old episodes to figure it out, and the fact that the best-ever wild edited Tokyo was in response to them forgetting it, and then... the mind-explosion that Rhett has that he has never seen it from the viewer's perspective and now he finally truly appreciates it (but maybe he can never appreciate it to the full extent since it's the unexpected nature of it that makes it so funny).
Lol at the ending. :)
I like to time the "Whaaat" to see what Rhett achieves. My favorite is still the "bloooood" competition where he goes 45(?) seconds, then Link says that it's all that Tokyo stuff, and Rhett almost passes out fulfilling the bit.
I would love to know the total amount of time the Tokyo-What bit has taken up through the years.
From enemies to lovers - Rhett's history with Tokyo bit π
I really think the fun part about this bit is that no one knows when it's gonna happen. And now I can't wait for the first Tokyo of season 21!
The end was *chef kiss*
My all time favorite Tokyo moment was when I went to Rhett & Link live on April 7th, 2019 and someone in the crowd said it-- Rhett of course broke the rules and to this day, I regret not recording it.
Hearing it live was incredible! I was at that same show, but I didn't record it either.
I'm like Rhett so this bit started to get old for me too but now after watching this I'm "re-intrigued" by it π
Rhett went through a recurring bit evolution in this episode and it must be commended
the way Rhett completely changed his mind throughout this episode ahahha
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?
Watching the evolution of Rhett's feelings about "Tokyo" throughout this video was a joy. π
Tokyo is my favorite recuring bit! Always fun ^^
that ending was perfect
Recurring jokes like this are why I had to go back to the beginning to watch every episode in order (because that's definitely the best way to do things π). Once I realized there were these inside jokes and bits I had to see how they started
Sidenote: I love this Rhett sweater π
as someone who does fast forwards through the WHAAAAAAT, i still appreciate the bit.
OMG I'm crying laughing watching this remembering how amazing Toyko is ππ
I was one of those confused people when I first came across a Tokyo bit. But I eventually tracked down the origins.
my cat used to run towards the tv and stare VERY intently with his tail swaying. he doesn't even pay attention to it anymore though LOL
